Should we ignore rankings?

No. Rankings still send visits. Citations are an extra place a buyer can meet the brand, and they follow different rules.

What does a good citation look like?

The assistant names you and describes the offer the way your page describes it, with a link back to that page.

Why do rankings miss AI citations?

A high ranking does not guarantee an AI citation. Assistants quote pages that state a clear answer, use a stable name, and can be crawled. A page can sit near the top of Google for a vague title and still be skipped when the model writes the answer.
